This brick veneer house built on the side of a hill offered great views and leafy surroundings, but limited space. When its owners decided to extend the building, they could only go downhill: the other side was too close to the road, and would have restricted the works to just 1 level. Peter was after a light-weight construction that would avoid having to use heavy lintels and other structural members; access was an issue, so keeping light was essential. He also needed to bring his energy rating up to the new ACT 6 stars requirements, and didn’t want to compromise with smaller windows. So cladding his place with an external wall insulation came as a natural choice....
“I just love your product, what a great way to build a wall!” |

After many years living in Canberra, the owners of this building decided “to move back home”, to the coastline they grew-up on. They encountered a few unexpected hurdles when rocks had to be removed to lay foundations, delaying construction. So when Igloo were called to complete the entire first floor, a particular emphasis was placed on completion date, as costly scaffolds were required to enable access. We are happy to say that all panels were installed on a steel frame within a week of the start date, and the rendering work was completed within 2 weeks. The render was a mid-grain sponge-finish, applied in 3 coats to achieve maximum definition.
“I was very impressed with Igloo’s professionalism and service on my project. Your renderer was great and the end result is starting to look very good.”

The owners of this place had a real vision to transform their living space, and they committed to it for the long haul. Paul & Jenny were very careful when selecting their cladding: they asked us for addresses so that they could see and touch completed works for themselves; although, aesthetic wasn’t all they were thinking of. We talked about R-Value, energy consumption, acoustics, impact resistance… In the end, they turned a typical cold and dark double-brick duplex of the inner suburbs of Canberra, into a light groovy thermal fortress. 100mm panels were used on all first floor extensions, and deep timber frame was erected to give enough room for an insulative void between internal bats and the external cladding. Wide openings and high ceiling wasn’t going to make this a cold habitat! In conjunction with great insulation, bay windows were strategically oriented to collect most of the northern sun, which was stored within the mass of their polished concrete floor. The upper floor (cladded with the Masterwall) was rendered with 2 base-coats and 1 tinted texture, while the rest of the walls were finished smooth and then lightly sponged to create contrast between the 2 levels.
